Library borrowers in Solano County now have access to books, DVDs, music, audible books   and other library materials from over sixty California libraries.  This expansion of services comes by way of a cooperative service of public and academic libraries called Link+.

“Our community now has access to the rich collections of California libraries from CSU Long Beach to the Academy of Art in San Francisco. If Solano County Library doesn’t have the book, movie or music you want, it is likely that one of these other libraries will,” said Bonnie Katz, director of Solano County Library.

The service is free to anyone with a card from the SPLASH (Solano Partner Libraries and St. Helena) consortium of libraries, which includes Solano County Library, Benicia Public Library, Dixon Public Library, and St. Helena Public Library. Solano County Library serves the cities of Fairfield, Suisun, Rio Vista, Vacaville and Vallejo.

The expanded service will have special appeal to those who are seeking academic or non-fiction materials that provide in-depth information or are about niche subjects. It is also useful for people who like to read all the books in a series or are looking for formats such as theatrical scripts and musical scores.

“At Solano County Library, we are committed to purchasing and lending the books, movies and musical items that are popular with Solano residents.  Link+ gives customers access to the items that may be more specialized,” said Katz.

Anyone who wishes to try Link+ can go to www.solanolibrary.com and search for Link+ items in the regular catalog by clicking the Link+ tab or they can click the Link+ button on the Find a Book page.

There are a few limitations to borrowing from Link+ due to the parameters set by the Link+ partners.  For example, Link+ items are not available for self-service check-out, borrowing periods can be shorter than the three weeks to which Solano library users are accustomed and there can be hefty charges for lost items.

“Link+ is the ultimate expression of sharing, and sharing is what libraries are all about.  We can’t wait for customers to start borrowing,” said Katz.
