Children’s Day / el día de los niños

By Natasha North

The John F. Kennedy Library is pleased to announce that award-winning illustrator Susan Guevara will help us celebrate “Día” on Saturday, April 29th at 2:00. El día de los niños / el día de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day) is a nationally recognized initiative to celebrate children, families, and reading.

Ms. Guevara is the illustrator of Chato’s Kitchen and the recipient of the prestigious honors such as the Pura Belpré Award, Americas Award, Tomas Rivera Award, among others. Her work regularly appears on “Best Of” lists. She will be sharing  her “Culture’s Soup” presentation. The audience will discover how Ms. Guevara’s family background helped her find raices, roots, in two cultures by learning about the illustration process for Chato’s Kitchen.  Parents will learn how to introduce family traditions from each other’s backgrounds to give their children a heightened sense of who they are and where they come from—even if those two backgrounds are from different geographies, different ethnicities, or different races. They will learn simple ways to creatively preserve their cultural identities and family histories in everyday situations.

After her presentation, Ms. Guevara will sign copies of her books. Light refreshments will be served and children may select one free book, while supplies last.

The day will wrap up with American folk music and children friendly tunes from local musicians, The Happy Neighbors.

Día activities at the John F. Kennedy Library are sponsored by the Friends of the Vallejo Public Libraries and First 5 Solano. This event will be held in the Joseph Room at the John F. Kennedy Library at 505 Santa Clara St. in Vallejo. For more information about library programs, visit us at or call 1-866-572-7587.
