Solano County Foundation awarded a grant for $7028 to help make a new sensory garden at the Fairfield Civic Center become a reality. The sensory garden is the brainchild of Serena Enger who is the supervising librarian at the Kentucky Street branch, and Teresa Lavell, a literacy program assistant who works in Solano County Library’s adult literacy program which is headquartered at the branch. They proposed the idea of as part of a Solano County Library innovation initiative, designed to support staff who engage the community in new or enhanced ways.  The garden was one of five ideas chosen to receive $1000 “start-up” funds from the Library.  Enger and Lavell also solicited in-kind donations of materials and labor.  “We are so proud and impressed by the innovations our staff proposed. From tech to nature, they are finding original and inventive ways to make our communities better places to live, said Bonnie Katz, Solano County’s director of library services.

The garden will include an area for outdoor storytimes along with a wide range of plants to engage the senses. The space will host programs and school visits for youth as well as drawing, art and gardening programs for adults.  “The purpose of the garden is to teach both children and adults various ways that nature engages each of the five senses,” said Enger.

“We hope that visitors will gain an enhanced awareness of nature, and we hope that it will be a lovely place to enjoy a book and connect with friends, said Lavell.”

Beth Shedden, president of the Solano County Library Foundation thanked representatives of the Solano Community Foundation, “We appreciate partners like the Solano Community Foundation who support our mission of literacy and lifelong learning.  This is a gift that will keep giving to Fairfield families for years to come.”
