Reach Out and Read

By Teresa Lavell

Reach Out and Read, a pediatric literacy program in Solano County is the current recipient of books donated through the local Barnes and Noble book drive.   Barnes and Noble customers have purchased and donated more than 800 books to benefit early literacy skills for children in Solano County.

Reach Out and Read is sponsored by the Solano County Library Foundation and Solano County Library.  The program provides books and training to pediatricians and nurse practitioners on engaging parents and their children, in early literacy activities.   A brand new, age, and culturally appropriate book is given to the child at each well child visit to help encourage parents to read aloud with their child, provide books in the home, and start encouraging a child’s love of reading.

Barnes and Noble is generously sponsoring Reach Out and Read through their holiday book drive allowing customers the opportunity to buy and donate a book, putting  books in the hands of kids that otherwise may not have access to books in the home.   The holiday book drive is ongoing through the month of December at the Fairfield Barnes and Noble.
