SOLANO LIBRARIES CELEBRATE PROMISES MADE AND PROMISES KEPT

During the month of January, Solano County Library will be marking the passage of Measure L, the 1/8th of a penny sales tax that comprises almost a quarter of the library system’s funding.   Solano County Library operates libraries in Fairfield, Suisun, Vacaville, Vallejo and Rio Vista. The balance of the library’s funding comes from property taxes (50%), reimbursement for services (23%) and fines and fees (2%).  Libraries in Benicia and Dixon also benefit from the fraction-of-a-penny tax.

In 2012 an overwhelming majority (80%) of voters, chose to extend the 1/8th of a penny sales tax for libraries in Solano County, which was first passed in 1998.  “Keeping the promises of more books, more hours, and more services for youth was difficult during the recession years. But it was vital that we maintained services, especially during those very difficult times,” said Bonnie Katz, Solano County’s director of library services.

Since the original tax passed, Solano County Library branches are open 125% more hours, the budget for books and other formats has more than tripled, from $432,000 to $1,491,728 and programs for youth have increased by 166%.

“Not only have we kept our original promises, we have expanded our services and have maintained them,” said Katz.  Since the original tax, the library operates three additional branches as well as robust collections of online services that can be accessed at any time.  Solano County Library branches also offer more than 100 programs each week for children, teens and adults.

“We did what we said we were going to do.  Now, with a new strategic plan in place we look forward to continuing to keep our promises and helping all Solano residents achieve success,” said Katz.
