LIBRARY SPONSORS BOOK-TO-ACTION SERIES: THE CIRCUIT
The community is invited to Solano County Library’s Book-to-Action series, featuring “The Circuit,” by Francisco Jiménez. The book is a memoir of short stories chronicling the life of young Francisco and his family as they travel and work through California’s migrant camps. Early on, he learns the importance of the library and education in his life. With scholarships he attends Santa Clara University, and he is a professor there today. Jiménez will speak at the Fairfield Civic Center Library in December. “The library is privileged to have Dr. Jimenez come to visit. His life clearly tells the story of education as an equalizer,” said Bonnie Katz, Solano County’s director of library services.
This work is ideally suited for a wide cross-section of readers. The language is simple and straightforward, while the ideas it presents are complex, thought provoking and emotionally moving. “The story of young Francisco will warm your heart and is sure to inspire your entire family. A great book to read together—one chapter each evening before going to bed,” said Joanne Wright, the Library’s literacy program manager who heads the project.
Book-to-Action is a variation on the traditional library book group—it offers participants not only the opportunity to collectively read and discuss a book and meet a book author, but also to put their newfound knowledge into action by engaging in a community service project or activity related to the book's topic.
Book-to-Action is a project of the California State Library in partnership with the California Center for the Book, and it is being implemented in libraries throughout the State. The project was supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.
For those interested in reading and discussing “The Circuit,” copies of the book are available (while supplies last) at the office of the Solano County Library Adult Literacy Program inside the Fairfield Civic Center Library at 1150 Kentucky Street. You may call the Literacy Office at 707-784-1526 to request your copy.
