Ramona Erwin was born on August 22nd, 1923, in the very same room where her mother had been born in Napa, California. Once she was old enough, Ramona wished to join the Navy to work as a nurse in order to support her country. At first, her father refused to allow his daughter to join, but Ramona persisted, and he finally gave in and signed the papers.
Ramona was sent to Mare Island, California to work as a hospital apprentice, assisting wounded soldiers who were being shipped home from fighting over in Europe and Japan.
