The Challenge

Try 12: Year-Long Reading Challenge asks you to read a book in each of the twelve categories below. Make 2021 the most diverse reading year yet and maybe even win a prize!

Register and Log Your Progress 

Designed for teens and adults, readers wanting to participate can register at any time and log during 2021. The program runs from January 1, 2021 through December 31, 2021.  To register and track your progress, visit https://solanolibrary.beanstack.org/reader365

Quarterly Prize Drawings

Those who complete the Challenge will earn a commemorative pin. Participants will automatically be entered into the quarterly drawings (March, June, September, and December) for chances to win great prizes.  Prizes include  ferry passes and gift cards. All prizes must be picked up at a branch. The Library will not ship any prizes to library users.

Monthly Reading Categories

  • January: Life Stories 
    • Biography, Autobiography, or memoir
  • February: Black History Month 
    • Black history, heritage and culture
  • March: Women’s History Month 
    • Inspiring stories about women or books by women writers
  • April: Diversity Month 
    • Stories about or take place in a different background or culture than yours
  • May: Asian Pacific American Heritage Month 
    • Read a book that celebrates Asian or Pacific Islander culture, or highlights the American-born or immigrant experience.
  • June: LGBTQ Pride Month 
    •  Books featuring lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) individuals.
  • July: Disability Pride Month 
    • Stories that portray members of the disabled community in positive and significant featured roles.
  • August: Romance Awareness Month 
    • Romance stories about characters or settings with a different culture/background from our own.
  • September: National Hispanic Heritage Month 
    • Read a book that celebrates a Hispanic culture, or highlights the American-born or immigrant experience.
  • October: Read Something Scary Month
    • Creepy ghost or monster stories from around the world.
  • November: Native American Heritage Month
    • Stories about or by indigenous people.
  • December: Human Rights Month 
    • Books by or about human rights activists or stories on human rights.
